☕✨ The Beautiful Tradition of Afternoon Tea ✨☕Did you know that the much-loved tradition of Afternoon Tea began in England during the 1840s?The credit goes to Anna Russell, the Duchess of Bedford, a close friend and lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. At the time, it was common to eat only two main meals a day – breakfast and a late evening dinner. By late afternoon, the Duchess would often feel hungry, so she began requesting a tray of tea, bread and butter, and small cakes to be brought to her private room.What started as a simple solution to satisfy her afternoon hunger soon became a social occasion. Anna began inviting friends to join her, and before long, the fashionable ladies of high society were gathering for elegant afternoons of tea, conversation, and delicious treats.Queen Victoria quickly embraced the tradition, and with the Royal Family’s support, Afternoon Tea became one of Britain’s most cherished customs. As one of our supporters asked for History. Here is a little sneak preview 😉 Betty’s Boutique Hotel was originally built in 1903 as a private family residence. For generations, it was home to the Scholtz family, becoming a place filled with memories, stories, and history.We believe the property was sold in the early 2000s and subsequently owned by two other families before we purchased it in 2017. Then turned it in to a boutique hotel. While we know the names of the previous owners, we prefer to keep those details private.Not long after taking ownership, we received a very special visit. The doorbell rang, and at the gate stood Dick Scholtz and his wife. During their visit, they shared that this had been their family home for many years and was where they had spent much of their childhood. As we walked around the property together, they told us wonderful stories of life at the house and the memories they had created here.Later that year, Dick’s daughter (Este)visited us with a remarkable gift. She had discovered old family photographs stored away in the attic, which had been carefully transferred from the original film and printed. These treasured images provide a fascinating glimpse into the property’s past.Among the photographs, you can see members of the Scholtz family enjoying a braai in what is now our courtyard, relaxing on the original stoep reading newspapers, and taking in the beautiful views over Mossel Bay Harbour from the very same stoep our guests enjoy today.History is one of the things that makes Betty’s so special, and we love sharing these stories with our guests.
